Winding a set of Johnston hand-wound humbucker pickups for a customer.
This set are the Riveter type with zebra bobbins.
You’ll see from the photo that I like to keep the tension on the coil wire using my hand.
This gives me a better feel for the tension and I can make minor changes to the strength of my grip to adjust the tightness of the coils and create more gaps in the coils which, in conjunction with scatter winding, generate more magnetic “eddy currents”.
This is one of the main contributors in my opinion to the more dynamic sound you get from a hand-wound pickup in comparison to a factory machine-wound pickup.
Although there is a specific range of hand-wound pickups listed in my on-line shop, I can make just about any specification you want.
Indeed, most of the pickups I make are commissions for specific specifications.
Signature style pickups aren’t a problem.
If you want to discuss having a specific set of custom made pickups, it’s just a matter of giving me a call or an email.
